How to Layer Your Skincare

It’s so confusing (I know), you have all of these wonderful products and you want to use them all but you don’t know if you are applying them right, RIGHT!? So how do you apply your skincare products? If you have a full regimen from one brand only then your skincare consultant or facialist has probably told you what order to use everything and when. So that’s good. However, if you are like me (someone who loves different products from different brands) then you need to know how to layer and apply your products in the right order.

Not applying your products in the right order can be such a waste of your time and money. Think about it, if you are putting a product on top of another product and they do not work well together then really only that first product you applied is getting soaked into your skin. I first realized this was happening to me back when I used to only wear cream products (maybe one serum and the rest creams) and they were not soaking in. So I would apply one product and then the second product on top (without waiting for the first to soak in) and everything was pilling and rolling into my hands and DEFINITELY not doing anything for my skin!

The way to apply your products is from lightest to thickest. The thickest for me is always SPF because I do not wear cream products. My SPF is the only creamy type product I wear. I like products to be light and potent so I stick with watery type formulas and serums. Since I use light, watery types of products each one soaks in fairly quickly and they do not just sit on top of each other. I also apply a neck cream after I apply my face oil so the oil has a little more time to soak in before I apply my SPFs. The SPF I wear on my face also has skincare benefits so I wear a different mineral SPF on my chest and arms since I need to use more product in those areas.

Here is the order I wear my products in the daytime:

  1. Toner

  2. Antioxidant with Vitamin C

  3. Peptides

  4. Serum

  5. Eye serum

  6. Light acid

  7. Moisturizing oil

  8. Neck treatment

  9. SPFs (face, chest/arms, and eyes)

Simple right! I know - it’s a lot but everyone has their thing and skincare is certainly my thing. Plus these products soak in so well I only need 10 minutes in my morning to apply them all and go. Each of the products I use play a role for me in my anti-aging regimen. I think I’ve been chasing the anti-aging train since I was in my 20s (hahahaha) but I’ve finally caught up and have found what works for me. The products I use may change once I’m in my late 40s and onwards but for now this works great!

I hope this was helpful. Take a look at your own products, feel them, see which ones are lightest to thickest and apply in that order (SPF is always last)! You can see my You Tube video below where I apply my products in the right order as well as the list of brands and products I used.
