Skin Brightening Turmeric Mask

So, I’m totally obsessed with turmeric and it probably has something to do with my Indian background. My mom used turmeric in almost every Indian recipe she cooks and passed that down to me and my sister, but it was not until I was much older that I learned how beneficial this plant is for our mind, body, and outer beauty.

Now growing up this wasn’t something I took much stock in and stubbornly refused to believe turmeric was any good for our skin! After all, why didn’t brands like Oil of Olay (which I used from the age of 13 through my early 20s) and Neutrogena have turmeric in their products when they were all knowing!?? Now I’m older and a little wiser and I’ve seen an explosion of natural, ancient, Ayurvedic ingredients like turmeric used in modern skincare brands; and these are huge brands like Kiehl’s, Tata Harper, Juara, Sunday Riley, Kora Organics, Farsali, Clarins, Glow Recipe, the list goes on and on. Another post on my favorite retail products containing turmeric coming soon.

A little background on this amazing substance. Turmeric is a plant from Southeast Asia and the Indian Subcontinent and the root of this plant is the part that we use. It has been used in Asia and Indian for thousands of years as a dye, as medicine, and in beauty rituals where it is made into a haldi paste when mixed with water. This haldi paste is still used today in Indian marriages. The reason turmeric is so good for your skin is that it helps to brighten and draw out impurities in skin thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It has also been known to help reduce acne scarring and I’m currently using this for my sun spots on my face.

DIY Skin Brightening Turmeric Mask

1/4 tsp Unrefined Virgin Coconut Oil

1/4 cup Greek Yogurt (I like Greek yogurt since it is thicker and the mask will not be runny) substitute with Goats Milk yogurt or a non-dairy yogurt if you have milk allergies

1 tsp Raw Honey

The juice from 1 lemon slice

1/4 tsp Turmeric powder

These next 2 ingredients I added in for additional anti-aging and moisturizing benefits. You can omit these if you want:

3 drops Rosehip Seed Oil

1/4 tsp Vitamin E oil

Mix it all together and apply on your face . I usually leave it on for 15 mins. Wipe off with a damp wash cloth (WARNING - your cloth will turn bright yellow and never be white again so use a cloth you’re not attached too!) Massage in your favorite facial oil to end the mask. VOILA - Enjoy bright glowing skin!
