Ashwagandha Berry Smoothie
First off, before we get into the actual smoothie recipe, I have to talk a little bit about Ashwagandha to my readers that have never heard about this amazing herb! If you already know everything you need to know about Ashwagandha then scroll down and you will see my recipe and video on how I make the Ashwagandha Berry Smoothie.
So, I first heard about Ashwagandha (known as Indian Ginseng) a few years ago when I was researching Ayurvedic herbs for health and this is one of the top treatments that pulled up as something beneficial that can be used in hormonal balancing and mood enhancement. I was looking for something that would naturally help me manage stress, help me focus, and also help me sleep better (without taking melatonin). I had a one year old and a 6 year old, was working all the time on weekdays and weekends, and not sleeping well because my mind was constantly thinking about what I needed to do next. I knew I wanted it to be an Ayurvedic sort of treatment and Ashwagandha kept popping up in all of my research.
The part of Ashwagandha that we use is the ground up root. It can be used in food, drinks, medicine, and lately I have seen it in skincare products. Side note: It’s just crazy how you start to read about something and then you start to notice products in stores and online! I was walking through one of my favorite small grocery stores here in the South, called Sprouts, when I noticed a protein smoothie drink made with Ashwaghandha. Okayyy, that looked interesting. So I bought it, loved it, was fascinated that a company put Ashwagandha in their drink and of course decided to do even more research about it. I also noticed more and more supplements using Ashwagandha in their formulas.
Ashwaghandha is classified as an adaptogen. It is known to be a mood enhancer, stress leveler (which this momma needs!), immune booster, brain booster, and helps to level out your blood sugar levels. I think it has definitely helped me regulate my own stress levels after regular use. It has also helped me sleep better at night by helping me to fall asleep faster and I wake up more refreshed.
The Ashwagandha I purchase is through Terrasoul Superfoods. It comes in a large bag that lasts me a long time. I only use about 1 tsp of Ashwaghanda in my smoothies.
The Ashwagandha Berry Smoothie below is so yummy you won’t even know it’s good for you. The root can be slightly bitter but when mixed into a smoothie or a sweet warm drink the flavor is completely masked. Try this smoothie recipe, tell me it isn’t delicious, and let me know how you like it! Also linking all of the products I used in my smoothie below.
